First of all, it is not illegal to take pictures in a public place, even of the people walking down the street. To help you ensure that your photo snapping is acceptable, avoid being too conspicuous. Turn off as many noisemaking parts of your camera as you can. Don’t wear loud or obnoxious clothing. Depending on your level of experience, you may or may not want to carry a lot of equipment with you. Just your camera and a couple of extra lenses is probably all that you will need.
Just go out and shoot pictures on the street. Take your camera with you everywhere you go. If you always have your camera out and ready, it’s much easier to capture a picture that you see coming together. Take as many pictures as possible. With digital cameras available, you don’t have to pay to develop unwanted pictures. So go ahead and take as many as possible. You never know what great picture you’ll find while going through your camera later. And getting rid of the bad ones is a simple matter of hitting the delete button. By trying it out yourself, you will be able to gain a new respect for urban photographers and their work.
